Community members will take to the streets in support of science at the second annual March for Science – Chico On Saturday, April 14 2018.
More than 3,000 people from Chico and surrounding communities joined the first March for Science last year. Over a million people gathered worldwide that day in history’s largest event to advocate for science. These marches originated in a deep concern about the growing movement to dismiss scientific evidence in the health field, climate science, and a wide range of other disciplines.
Scientists and their supporters will assemble again on Sat April 14 to call on all governments to enact evidence based, equitable public policies that promote health and well-being for all communities. This will be a worldwide event with marches in Washington, D.C., Abuja, Nigeria, and many other cities.
Our local event will take place 10am-2pm, starting at Trinity Commons Lawn on the Chico State Campus. All are welcome to attend this free event.
Science education and other groups will staff booths where citizens can learn about local water quality, agriculture, the principles of physical science, math, local wildlife’s current situation, and much, much more.
Speeches, activities and music will precede the march through downtown Chico that will return to Trinity Commons for wrap-up activities. Click here for a map of the march route.
The peaceful and non-partisan local event is meant to highlight the important role that scientific research plays in our daily lives in the North State community, and sound a call to support scientific research and evidence-based policies. The event welcomes all people who support science. Participants in Chico and throughout the world will unite in calls for scientifically based health care, pollution prevention, and healthy food policies for all communities, including those that have been marginalized. Participants will counter common stereotypes about scientists as they celebrate researchers who are women and/or people of color.
Many marchers will stress protection of national parks and other wild places, including those that are homes for indigenous people. Science teachers believe that solid educational policies encourage all people to develop their curiosity about dinosaurs, the recent discoveries of distant planets, the huge diversity of birds, laws of motion, and all topics. Scientifically literate people from all backgrounds will work to influence positive policies on these and many other topics.
Participants are encouraged to bring signs that highlight—in clever and creative ways—the importance of science in protecting health, safety, and the environment, and that call for preserving funding for research and enacting evidence-based policies.
This is a non-partisan event in support of science, a family-friendly and peaceful event.
