12 Marylia Kelly is the Executive Director of the Livermore-based Tri-Valley CAREs. She brings more than 37 years of in-depth research, analysis and facilitating public participation in decisions regarding U.S. nuclear weapons and environmental cleanup, with a focus on the Department of Energy, its National Nuclear Security Administration and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Kelley has provided testimony on the nuclear weapons complex before the U.S. Congress and the California Legislature, and has been an expert witness in environmental litigation involving Livermore Lab and other nuclear weapons sites. She represents Tri-Valley CAREs at the United Nations, including by conducting advocacy to support the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Her organization,
Tri-Valley CAREs was founded in 1983 in Livermore, California by concerned neighbors living around the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of two locations where all US nuclear weapons are designed. Tri-Valley CAREs monitors nuclear weapons and environmental clean-up activities throughout the US nuclear weapons complex, with a special focus on Livermore Lab and the surrounding communities.
12:30 Dale Preston is a biostatistician with almost 40 years’ experience describing and quantifying the long-term health effects of radiation in humans. He played a central role in developing the modern methods and tools used to characterize radiation effects and has authored or co-authored almost 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Between 1981 and 2004, while living in Hiroshima, Dr. Preston worked on studies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic-bomb survivors, at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation and remains active in the Foundation’s research. Since 1987 he has been involved in studies of various Russian populations, initially Chernobyl victims, but primarily people exposed to radiation as a result of the operations of the Russian reactor and plutonium production complex (Mayak). He has served as a consultant for the United Nations Scientific Committee on Atomic the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the US National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation. Dr. Preston is a Fellow of both the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He lives in Humboldt Co and is a member of the peace activist group, Which Way the Wind.
