Rick Jahnkow is a co-founder and board member of the Project on Youth and
Non-Military Opportunities (Project YANO), a nonprofit counter-recruitment
organization based in San Diego County. For 34 years he worked as the
organization’s full-time program coordinator. During that time, he researched
and organized around the issues of military recruiting, high school Jr. ROTC,
and the general militarization of K-12 schools. He has done extensive writing
and media work on these topics and continues to serve as a background
resource for journalists working on recruiting-related stories.
During the 1980s, Rick was an advisor for a lawsuit that resulted in a 9th
Circuit Appeals Court ruling establishing the right of counter-recruitment
activists to have the same access to schools as military recruiters. (San Diego
Committee Against Registration and the Draft (CARD) v. Governing Board of
the Grossmont Union High School District, 790 F .2d 1471 (9th Cir. 1986)).
